Homework # 25 “The End of the Spear”

Living out our faith can be extremely valuable and costly, but what can happen by doing this can matter eternally.  A group of men, who had families, led by Jim Elliot went to Ecuador to share the gospel with the Huaorani, an unreached, secluded Indian tribe who lived in the jungles of Ecuador.

Elliot and four other missionaries – Ed McCully, Roger Youderian, Pete Fleming, and their pilot, Nate Saint – made contact from their airplane with the Huaorani using a loudspeaker and a basket to pass down gifts. After several months, the men decided to build a base a short distance from the Indian village, along the Curaray River. There they were approached one time by a small group of Huaorani and even gave an airplane ride to one curious Huaorani whom they called “George” (his real name was Naenkiwi). Encouraged by these friendly encounters, they began plans to visit the Huaorani, without knowing that Naenkiwi had lied to the others about the missionaries’ intentions.  Their plans were preempted by the arrival of a larger group of about 10 Huaorani warriors, who killed Elliot and his four companions on January 8, 1956. Elliot’s body was found downstream, along with those of the other men, except that of Ed McCully which was found even farther downstream.

Below is an interview with Nate Saints son and his dads killer.  See what happened next.

What powerful ideas were done to reach the Huaorni for Christ?  What happened that was powerful because Jim Elliot, Ed McCully, Rodger Youderian, Pete Fleming, and Nate Saint lived out their faith?

Hello Parents and Students

We are currently studying the “Power of the Church” and the impact it has made throughout history through the lives of the many who have served in it, but have also served others because of it.  We also believe that there is no better way to see the power of the church except in person.  This is why we are visiting not just historical churches but thriving churches.

We will go Friday morning to visit and tour one of the oldest churches in Los Angeles, Hollywood Presbyterian Church.  It is has a full history of changing lives and is known for sending out people that have influenced the world.  We will also be visiting a very different church down the street called Hope International Bible Fellowship.  It is a church of 4 churches in one and also service the needs of the needy in the area.  We will hear and see how the church can bring powerful change in people’s lives.

We also want to take them to experience a couple services at some large churches that are making an impact in our area.  We know a Sunday night is not a usual time for a field trip, but the opportunity for our students to be in a service, in a large church, together, and sitting down for pizza afterward discussing what we experience, will be eye opening.

Details for Friday’s Trip – February 21st

  • We will be meeting at 8am in the morning to head out to L.A. and be back by 4pm
  • We will stop for lunch at In-N-Out in-between visits for lunch.  Student’s need to bring money for lunch.
